A compound formed by the substitution of two hydrogen atoms in a methane molecule with chlorine. Dichloromethane is a colorless, transparent, heavier than water, volatile liquid with an ether-like odor and sweet taste, does not burn, but when mixed with a high concentration of oxygen forms an explosive mixture. Dichloromethane is slightly soluble in water and is mutually soluble with most commonly used organic solvents. It can also be miscible with other chlorine-containing solvents, ethyl ether and ethanol in any proportion. Dichloromethane is the least toxic of methane chlorides, its toxicity is only 0.11% of carbon tetrachloride toxicity. If methylene chloride is sprayed directly into the eye, it can be painful and corrosive. The vapor of dichloromethane has a narcotic effect.
