FK-5-1-12, also known as FK5112 or fluoroketone fire protection liquid, is stored as a clear liquid inside fire suppression cylinders at ambient temperature. It only transforms into FK-5-1-12 gas after discharge, so it is critical to understand that its fire-extinguishing function starts with a rapid phase change.

When a fire detection system triggers release, the liquid FK-5-1-12 flows through piping and nozzles. The pressure drop during discharge causes instant vaporisation, turning the liquid into fine droplets and then low-concentration FK-5-1-12 gas that quickly fills the enclosed protected space. Unlike inert gas agents that put out fires mainly by displacing oxygen, FK-5-1-12 suppresses combustion through two primary mechanisms: heat extraction and chemical flame inhibition.

The dominant working principle is sensible and latent heat absorption. The fluoroketone molecule has high heat capacity. As liquid droplets evaporate into FK-5-1-12 gas, this phase change absorbs massive amounts of thermal energy from the flame. It rapidly pulls the temperature of the fuel and flame zone below the threshold required to sustain combustion. This cooling effect is the fastest acting part of its suppression performance, especially effective for Class B flammable liquid fires and Class C live electrical fires.

The secondary mechanism is chemical chain reaction interruption. At high flame temperatures, FK-5-1-12 gas breaks down and releases fluorine-based free radicals. These active species capture the high-energy hydrogen and hydroxyl radicals that keep the fire's oxidation cycle running. By scavenging these radicals, the continuous combustion chain is broken, stopping flame propagation even if oxygen is still present in the room. This makes it different from CO₂ or nitrogen systems, which rely heavily on oxygen reduction and pose suffocation risks for occupied areas.

Once the fire is controlled and the supply of FK-5-1-12 stops, the fluoroketone gas does not leave solid or oily residues. FK-5-1-12 gas slowly dissipates through normal ventilation. Its short atmospheric lifetime means it will not persist in the environment long after the fire event. The agent maintains excellent dielectric strength while in gaseous form, so it will not create short circuits or damage energised electronics such as servers, semiconductor tools and battery management hardware.

One important practical note: FK-5-1-12 gas requires a properly sealed enclosure to maintain the designed flooding concentration for the required hold time. Without adequate room integrity, the gas leaks out too quickly and cannot sustain suppression. Fire engineers calculate the discharge quantity based on enclosure volume, leakage rate and the specific hazard class to ensure FK-5-1-12 gas reaches and stays at the minimum design concentration.
