What is PFA? Tel:+86-592-5803997
PFA (Perfluoroalkoxy Polymer) is a tough, flexible fluoropolymer that is used for flexible tubing and fluid processing equipment when chemical resistance, high purity, and low stiffness are required. PFA has outstanding electrical properties including high dielectric strength, a low dissipation factor, and a low dielectric constant. The material has outstanding resistance to outdoor weathering.
With an upper temperature resistance of 260°C, the highest purity control level, and extremely strong chemical inertness, this fluorine material is melt-processable and represents a standard choice for semiconductor wet processes, balancing high purity with formability.
PFA Perfluoroalkoxy Polymer Applications

Thanks to melt-processable thermoplastic properties, ultra-high purity, full-spectrum chemical inertness and long-term thermal stability up to 260°C, PFA is widely adopted across high-end industrial, semiconductor and food-grade production sectors for critical fluid-contact hardware:
1. Pump housings and pipe linings: Lined pump bodies and seamless PFA pipe inner barriers fully isolate metal substrates from aggressive etching fluids, hydrofluoric acid, hot acid mixtures and organic solvents. They eliminate corrosion risks, reduce metal ion leaching, and extend equipment service life in continuous chemical delivery loops for AI chip manufacturing lines.
2.Fluid handling and chemical processing equipment: All wetted components including valves, fittings, manifolds and transfer vessels adopt PFA construction. Its smooth non-stick surface prevents fluid residue buildup, avoids cross-contamination between different high-purity chemicals, and supports stable circulation of corrosive electronic wet chemistries in central chemical supply systems.
3.Wet bench equipment: PFA serves as the core structural material for semiconductor wet processing stations, including rinse tanks, spray bars, overflow channels and internal fixture parts. It withstands repeated exposure to SC1/SC2 cleaning solutions, piranha etchants and heated phosphoric acid without degradation, maintaining zero particle pollution during wafer cleaning and stripping procedures.
4.Tank linings: Thick PFA sheet lining coats storage and mixing tanks for ultra-pure electronic chemicals. Pinhole-free welded PFA layers form an impermeable barrier against strong acids and oxidizers, protecting tank base materials while keeping stored fluids free of impurities that would ruin wafer yield in AI chip fabrication.
5.Semiconductor wafer carriers: Injection-molded high-purity PFA wafer boats and cassettes securely hold silicon wafers through etching, cleaning and CMP polishing cycles. Low extractable ion levels and scratch-resistant surfaces prevent micro-defects on delicate wafer surfaces, a non-negotiable standard for advanced GPU and AI accelerator chip production.
6.Food processing and packaging equipment: Food-contact grade PFA is applied on mixer liners, conveyor guides, mold coatings and filling machine components. It resists harsh CIP alkaline cleaning agents, offers permanent non-stick performance, complies with global food safety standards, and avoids flavor or microbial contamination during food production and sealed packaging workflows.
PFA's unique combination of PTFE-level chemical resistance and thermoplastic weldability makes it irreplaceable for any high-purity, corrosive fluid handling scenario where zero contamination and long equipment lifespan are top priorities.
PTFE vs PFA: Differences Between PTFE and PFA
Tel:+86-592-5803997
1. Chemical Structure
PTFE is a homopolymer made solely from tetrafluoroethylene monomers. Its molecular chain has no side branches and cannot melt under regular heating.
PFA is a copolymer of tetrafluoroethylene and perfluoroalkoxy. Perfluoroalkoxy side chains are added to its molecular structure, giving it thermoplastic melt characteristics.
2. Processing Performance
PTFE is non-melt processable. It can only be shaped via cold pressing followed by high-temperature sintering. Common forms include PTFE powder, emulsion, molded sheets and extruded rods. Welding and thermal reshaping are not feasible.
PFA is thermoplastic. It melts at around 305°C, supporting injection molding, extrusion, hot welding and thermal forming. Finished products can be cut, welded and reshaped conveniently.
3. Appearance & Basic Physical Properties
PTFE presents an opaque milky white color. It has an extremely low friction coefficient and excellent wear resistance, but suffers obvious creep deformation under long-term pressure.
PFA is translucent. It retains outstanding chemical inertness similar to PTFE while featuring better flexibility, anti-creep performance and crack resistance. Its surface adhesion to metals and glass is superior to PTFE.
4. Electrical Properties
Both materials own nearly identical ultra-low dielectric constant (Dk ≈ 2.0–2.1) and low dissipation factor, with stable electrical performance across a wide frequency range. PTFE delivers slightly lower dielectric loss at ultra-high frequencies.
5. Temperature Resistance
Both can work continuously at up to 260°C. The melting point of PTFE reaches 327°C, higher than PFA's melting point of roughly 305°C.
6. Chemical Resistance
Their corrosion resistance is almost equivalent. They resist nearly all strong acids, strong alkalis, oxidants and organic solvents, and will not react with most chemical media under normal working temperatures.
7. Typical Application Scenarios
PTFE:High-frequency circuit substrate raw materials, non-stick coatings, sealing gaskets, bearing liners, anti-corrosion lining sheets, insulation parts for cables. It is widely used in mass manufacturing thanks to lower raw material cost.
PFA:High-purity semiconductor fluid equipment, pipe linings, pump casings, wet bench fixtures, wafer carriers, chemical tank liners and food-grade processing machinery. It is favored for scenarios requiring weldability, low ion precipitation and easy precision molding, though its material cost is higher.
PTFE is a non-melt sinterable fluoropolymer with better high-frequency electrical performance and lower cost, ideal for large-volume anti-corrosion and insulation parts. PFA is melt-processable thermoplastic fluoropolymer with excellent molding and welding capacity, mainly used in high-purity precision chemical and semiconductor equipment.
