Air conditioners transfer heat while circulating refrigerant between the indoor and outdoor units. Although there are various types of refrigerants, freon gas R32 is a balanced refrigerant currently receiving attention. Because gas freon R32 efficiently conveys heat, it can reduce electricity consumption up to approximately 10% compared to that of air conditioners using refrigerant R22. Furthermore, compared to the refrigerants widely used today such as R22 and R410A, R32 refrigerant has a global warming potential (GWP) that is one-third lower and is remarkable for its low environmental impact.

The development history of R32 refrigerant is closely related to environmental protection requirements and the progress of refrigeration technology, as follows:

Restricted early applications: R 32 gas for AC was first used as a refrigerant in the 1970s. However, due to its flammable and explosive properties, its application was greatly restricted under the technical and safety management conditions at the time.

Attention gained due to environmental advantages: With the emphasis on environmental protection, especially the Montreal Protocol's control of refrigerants that destroy the ozone layer (such as R22), finding environmentally friendly alternative refrigerants has become the key to the industry. R32 gas for ac has gradually attracted attention because of its ozone depletion potential (ODP) of 0 and relatively low global warming potential (GWP).

Large-scale application stage: After 2010, with the advancement of refrigeration technology and in-depth research on R32 gas characteristics, its high-efficiency refrigeration performance has been further recognized, and R32 has begun to be used on a large scale in the air-conditioning field. Mainstream air-conditioning manufacturers such as Gree, Midea, and Haier have completed the switch to R32 refrigerant. In 2022, the R32 model will account for about 65%-80% of the household air conditioning market, becoming the mainstream product among household air conditioning refrigerants.

Facing new challenges: The Kigali Amendment to the Montreal Protocol was passed in 2016, which included hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) in the scope of control. As an HFCs refrigerant, R32 faces a reduction in production and consumption. According to the requirements, China and other A5 countries should freeze the production and consumption of HFCs in 2024, and gradually reduce them later. In addition, according to the report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), the GWP value of R32 refrigerant was raised from 675 to 771, which is higher than the upper limit of the GWP value of 750 for split air conditioning refrigerants in the EU, which will take effect on January 1, 2025. Its application in the EU market may be limited in the future.

Storage:
