THE History of FK 5 1 12 Clean Agent

 

FK 5 1 12 Clean Agent, also known as Perfluorohexanone, with the chemical formula of CF3CF2COCF(CF3)2, currently available research shows that in the 1970s, scientists in the former Soviet Union had reported the synthesis technology of perfluorohexanone, but it was not put into large-scale production; in the 1980s, Shanghai San Ai Fu New Materials Co., Ltd. also obtained a small amount of perfluorohexanone for use as a solvent during the development of perfluoro-n-propyl vinyl ether.

 

Later, with the implementation of environmental protection policies, halon fire extinguishing agent was eliminated. In 2001, the US 3M Company launched perfluorohexanone fire extinguishing agent as a halon substitute, with the trade name Novec1230, which attracted widespread attention.

Perfluorohexanone is a colorless, odorless, transparent liquid at room temperature and is easily vaporized. Its heat of evaporation is 1/25 of that of water. This property allows it to achieve the effect of extinguishing fires by absorbing heat through vaporization. Since the pressure of perfluorohexanone in the storage tank is low, it is very convenient to transport.

In terms of fire extinguishing performance, the use concentration of perfluorohexanone is 4%~6%, which is similar to Halon 1301, lower than other gaseous fire extinguishing agents, and has high efficiency.

 

Compared with other fire extinguishing agents, the outstanding advantage of perfluorohexanone is its environmental friendliness. The ozone depletion potential (ODP) of perfluorohexanone fire extinguishing agent is 0, which means it has no destructive effect on ozone; in terms of global warming effect. The global warming potential (GWP) of perfluorohexanone is only 1, which is 1/3500 of heptafluoropropane, and its atmospheric residence time is 5 days, making it a truly green and environmentally friendly refrigerant.

 

In terms of safety, the toxicity safety margin of perfluorohexanone is as high as 67~150%, which means that it is safer for the human body during use. It has been approved by the US Environmental Protection Agency for use in places where people are present.
