HFA-134a and HFA-227ea replaced the ozone-depleting chlorofluorocarbons CFC-12 and CFC-11. Although these focused on reducing the impact on atmospheric ozone depletion, the introduction of the HFA propellants also resulted in almost an order-of-magnitude reduction in the Global Warming Potential (GWP) associated with pMDI usage.

Having essentially completed the transition from ozone-depleting CFCs and HCFCs across a spectrum of applications, including pMDIs, there is now growing concern regarding the GWP of many hydrofluorocarbons,including HFA-134a and HFA-227ea.
