Clean Fire Suppression Agent Heptafluoropropane (HFC 227ea FM200)

clean agent fire suppression

Heptafluoropropane, scientifically known as FM200, HFC 227EA, 1 1 1 2 3 3 3 heptafluoropropane with the chemical formula C₃HF₇, is a hydrofluorocarbon (HFC) celebrated for its exceptional fire-extinguishing efficacy and environmental compatibility. As a colorless, odorless, and non-conductive gas, it has become a cornerstone in modern fire protection, particularly in environments where water-based systems or dry chemicals could cause irreversible damage.

ADVANTAGES:

 Clean fire suppression agent

 Quick To Take Effect

 Safe for occupied areas

 Short atmospheric lifetime

 UL Certified

How It Extinguishes Fires: The Chemical Mechanism

Unlike water or foam, which rely on cooling or smothering, heptafluoropropane FM200 acts through chemical inhibition. When exposed to high temperatures (above 500°C), it breaks down to release fluorine radicals. These radicals interrupt the combustion chain reaction by reacting with hydrogen and hydroxyl radicals-key intermediates in the fire's chemical cycle-effectively "starving" the fire of its energy source. This process works on Class B (flammable liquids), Class C (electrical), and even certain Class A (solid) fires, making it versatile for diverse settings.

In practical terms, this means a heptafluoropropane gas system can extinguish a fire in enclosed spaces within 10 seconds when deployed at concentrations between 7% and 10% (by volume), depending on the fuel type. For example, in server rooms, a 7.5% concentration is typically sufficient to suppress electrical fires without damaging circuit boards or sensitive data storage devices.

Core Chemical Properties

At the molecular level, heptafluoropropane's structure-with seven fluorine atoms bonded to a three-carbon chain-endows it with unique traits. It boasts a boiling point of -16.4°C at atmospheric pressure, allowing it to vaporize quickly when released, a critical feature for rapid fire suppression. Its density (approximately 6.4 kg/m³ at 20°C) is significantly higher than air, enabling it to blanket fire sources and displace oxygen efficiently. Importantly, it has a zero Ozone Depletion Potential (ODP), aligning with international agreements like the Montreal Protocol, and a Global Warming Potential (GWP) of 3,220 over 100 years-lower than older alternatives like halons, making it a transitional solution in low-emission strategies.

Safety and Regulatory Compliance

Safety is paramount, especially in occupied areas. Heptafluoropropane has a No-Observed-Adverse-Effect Level (NOAEL) of 9%-the highest concentration safe for human exposure during short-term (up to 5 minutes) fire events. Its Lowest-Observed-Adverse-Effect Level (LOAEL) is 10.5%, above which mild respiratory irritation may occur. This safety margin allows its use in occupied spaces like control rooms, hospitals, and museums.

Globally, it meets stringent standards:

UL certification for fire-extinguishing agents

EN compliance in the European Union

NFPA 2001 guidelines for clean agent fire extinguishing systems

Our company's heptafluoropropane is manufactured to exceed these standards, with purity levels ≥99.9% and strict moisture control (<10 ppm) to prevent corrosion in pipelines. Whether for industrial facilities or commercial buildings, our products ensure reliable, safe, and eco-conscious fire protection. view more about Heptafluoropropane~
